Week 5 - Wednesday
Embracing Self-Compassion
What about those behaviors that are unhelpful?
Like being quick to anger.
Self-Compassion is: Seeing all parts of you as serving your highest interest.
In the moment that part of you was created, it was created to keep you safe.
Compassion Practice: Have a conversation with the “unhelpful” part of you.
At its origin, the actions of that part helped you survive in some way.
It’s still just doing its job; it doesn’t know your circumstances have changed.
It just needs to be compassionately heard and reassured.
Thank it for protecting you. Let it know its service is no longer needed.
Give it permission to rest and reassure it you will handle things from here.
NOTE: If you would like to know more about this process, Google “Internal Family Systems”. IFS is a therapeutic approach that uses a non-pathologizing, evidence-based approach to healing.
What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
Have you ever done something and thought, “Why do I always…” or “Why can’t I…”?
If you think of that behavior as one “part” of you, how might it be trying to protect you?
