Hi, I’m Michelle Johnston
My pronouns are them/they & you can call me MJ

I’m a queer, non-binary, certified life coach, spiritual director, and ordained priest in the Christian Anglican tradition.

After working in Information Technology for over 30 years, The Spirit called and I did a 180. Some of my co-workers thought I was nuts for leaving a high-paying government job with a great pension, but it all worked out. I took a leap of faith, quit my job, sold my house and spent the next 3.5 years in an Episcopal Benedictine monastery. I know! What a left turn from life as an IT Geek!

While I was in discernment at the monastery, I had the amazing experience of being a jail chaplain in the Los Angeles County women’s facility. The women I met with in the jail opened my heart and made me a better, more compassionate person. I went into the jail with a desire to serve others and was equally, if not more, served by them. It was a life-changing experience I will always be grateful for.

As I’ve traveled my own journey of understanding and fully embracing my queer identity, my life has taken many wonderful twists and turns. As part of my training for jail chaplaincy, I took a year of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), I was a lay counselor at my church, I went through a wonderful spiritual direction training program offered by Stillpoint, became a certified facilitator in The Compassion Practice, and had the opportunity to become an Art for Healing facilitator. All of these things, including life coaching, overlap in that they require an ability to listen deeply, hold space for the tender areas of our lives, and notice what might be getting in the way of a life fully lived.

Later in life, I realized that some of my internal discontent was related to my gender identity and when I realized that, it was like scales falling from my eyes and I felt the freedom to embrace all of me. As I live more and learn more, I am enjoying the journey of an ever-deepening spirituality and an ever-increasing love for myself and others. And part of the joy of that journey is helping others do the same.

As an Enneagram One, I’m rational, idealistic and have a very strong sense of right and wrong. I am an advocate for change in our culture, our politics, and our personal lives, with the goal of equality for all humans. And I totally embrace the mystery of God and the cosmos and the connectedness of everything and everyone in it. As a student of The Guides, I wholeheartedly believe all of us are an aspect of The Divine in human form and we should treat each other as such.

It is with deep gratitude that I am able to live my desire to serve The Divinity within the LGBTQIA+ community through compassionate listening and coaching so you can find the joy in YOUR journey and KNOW just how divine you are.

Mission

To bring more beauty, compassion & love into the world.

Values

Compassion

Compassion is my passion. I am deeply invested in reaching those who are struggling and helping them get to a better place. I acknowledge that I have not walked in your shoes and I do not know your entire backstory. What I offer is my skill and expertise in a way that helps you connect with the wisdom that comes from your lived experience so, together, we can bring more beauty, love & compassion into your life.

Inclusion

One of my favorite churches lives by the motto: whoever you are, and wherever you are on your journey of faith, you are welcome here. I fully embraced this motto as a jail chaplain and I embody it in my coaching and spiritual direction as well. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done, you are an aspect of The Divine and bring a unique and valuable contribution to this world and you are welcome here.

Joy

I think of joy as a state of being. It’s something that can be cultivated, but that comes from the soul, not external circumstances. It’s even possible to experience joy in difficult times, when we are experiencing grief or uncertainty. Joy is important to a life well-lived and I believe we can tap into our joy through gratitude, laughter, creativity, connection, and awe. This is why we will lean into joy in our coaching or spiritual direction.

Pillars

  • Connection

We live in a universe of connection. You and I are connected and we live in relationships with individuals and communities that impact each other to varying degrees. So, the quality of our lives is directly impacted by the quality of our connections – to ourselves, the people we love, the communities we belong to, and to something bigger (however you define that).

  • Acceptance

We can feel accepted by our family, friends, or society. However, self-acceptance is the most transformational. It’s the foundation of change and an important prerequisite to being able to accept others as they are. Our work together will help you accept your worth as a human, as well as the people you struggle with and even those you dislike.

  • Respect

Queer people often experience disrespect because of who we are, even though we are as deserving of respect as anyone else. When we disagree, we can and should still treat each other with respect and compassion. It is possible to disagree with someone’s beliefs without canceling or dehumanizing them. We cannot heal unless we can see each other with respect and dignity.

  • Growth

I believe we all came here to learn something. The possibilities are endless, even in just our little corner of the cosmos. No matter how much we grow mentally, emotionally, or spiritually, there will always be opportunities to keep evolving. Coaching and/or spiritual direction can help you take full advantage of the life you’ve been given and go all in on the journey! Let’s go all in together!
