Lent 2022 - Week 3 Tuesday
Week 3 - Tuesday
Releasing Self-Criticism
When you don’t do something just right and your response is…
Self-Criticism is: I can’t ever do anything right!
It’s when your inner critic turns your mistakes into…YOU are a mistake.
That “I can’t ever…” really means “I’m not capable” or “there’s something wrong with me”.
Silence it: Notice the lie and set the record straight.
First, statements that include never, always, can’t ever…are rarely, if ever, true.
Knowing that, you might want to dismiss that initial exaggerated response;
“Well, I don’t honestly believe that.”
However, repeated thoughts like that, unchecked, it will become a beliefs.
So, it’s important to put those thoughts in check. The dialogue might look like this:
Wow, that’s an over-the-top statement.
Yes, I made a mistake, but that doesn’t mean “I’m” a mistake.
And, if I NEVER did anything right, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
In other words, don’t let the inner critic have the last word!
Let me know what you think in the comments.
Do you have any “I can’t…” or “I never…” or “I always…” beliefs?
