Lent 2022 - Week 1 Wednesday
Shame about our body…can you relate?
Shame is: Not wanting to look at your body in the mirror because you are too big, too old or…not enough of…
Silence it: Recognize that the enemy is not within & it’s an act of resistance to do the work of reprogramming our brains when it comes to body image.
For centuries, men have viewed woman as property and “for the use” of men.
The trillion-dollar beauty & diet industries have capitalized on this.
We are heavily marketed to in an attempt to make us think…
We’re too fat…so we need to spend time and money to get thin.
Our skin is flawed…so we need to purchase something to fix it.
Our lips need improvement…
Our hair is unacceptable…
You name it and we are being brainwashed to think it needs to be fixed and we spend a ton of money and time trying to fix all of it.
And because we’ll never live up to this unrealistic, fake version of a human, we feel shame. Not just because we’ve spent a lifetime trying and failing but because we’ve also been taught that it’s easy if we just do this one exercise, take this pill, eat this miracle food, etc.
And, if it’s so easy and we’re failing, then there must be something wrong with us.
We are NOT broken and we need to resist this harmful conditioning!
And silencing body shame is important because it impacts every area of our life.
According to Brene Brown, "What we think, hate, loathe and wonder about the acceptability of our bodies reaches much further and impacts far more than our appearance. The long reach of body shame can impact who and how we love, work, parent, communicate and build relationships."
Let me know what you think in the comments.
Have you spent a lifetime feeling bad about how you look? Are you ready to let go of this harmful programming?
